Board training Connective Communication

The OtherWise board participated in a team training in Connective Communication by Mascha Schutz. Mascha recently started her own business Commas in communication trainings for individuals and groups, and we were among the first to enjoy her workshop.

The training was based on Marshall Rosenberg’s theory of non-violent communication. In two and a half hours we were taught how to speak to each other in such a way that our message was clear but not invasive, conveying observations rather than judgments, and I-messages. According to Rosenberg’s theory, in essence every person aims for loving connection with the other person. Thus we should look for ways to convey our feelings in such a way that we can express ourselves while at the same time respectfully handling the other person’s feelings, too.

We ended the workshop with a problem-solving session: we brought up an actual communication related issue we faced as a board, and used the frame proposed by Rosenberg to solve it. Mascha’s workshop led us to better understanding of communicative issues, her advice was hands-on, and made us feel more connected as a team.

In principle, Mascha’s trainings and workshops are in Dutch. More information can be found on her website: www.commas.info
